I like it!

From http://www.secretgeek.net/macho_programming.asp:

If you've got time to write comments -- you've got time to refactor.

If you've got time to refactor, you've got time to write unit tests.

If you've got time to write unit tests, you've got time to redesign the system.

If you've got time to redesign, you've got time to drink.

Have a beer. Comments are for sissies.

Zooomr faves

So I have recently been dabbling with photo sharing websites, but primarily I chose Zooomr. I even went as far as putting a link on my site to my Zooomr page (above). So far my goal has been to publish any worthy photo to this site, and restrict my Zooomr photos to those that I really like. The interface and social aspect to that site is just too fun to ignore.

As I get a decent set of photos on Zooomr I'm taking more time to search and explore it. My reasoning being that if someone sees me comment on their pictures, I want to have something for them to see if they come check out mine. As I've searched I found a lot of nice shots and used Zooomr's "fave" option to keep tabs on them. If you're bored, then check out my (growing) collection of favorite shots:

There's a lot of crap on Zooomr, but there's also a lot of beautiful shots as well.

Assumption is the mother of all...

Recently Ben Rockwood published a post talking about Solaris password security. I wanted to link to it because I had fallen in the same trap in the past year. The danger is that by default, if you use a password longer than 8 characters, Solaris will gladly accept the 8 char start of it as valid:

Cuddletech's post

So if you're assuming that your long password is really doing what you think, it's probably a good idea to double check.

New music

Tonight while listening to Soma FM's Indie Pop Rocks stream I heard a song by a group called Matt Pond PA:

Their song, Lily Two, was pretty cool so I decided to google them. Well they do have a site that has the usual band stuff you'd expect. However, what I really liked was the fact they have 6 songs available for download in mp3 format :)

I also checked the tour dates, and it looks like they already came to MN this fall. Bummer.

New RSS feeds

As I find the time I'm slowly adding new functionality to this site. The latest thing I've added is links for a few RSS feeds on the right. The new one is one for the gallery, which will let you automatically know when new images have been added. Hopefully this makes it easier to keep tabs on what's new :)

Oh, and if you're not using it, you should seriously check out Google Reader. I used Juice, then Sage, but google got it right with this one. My only gripe is your folders are sorted alphabetically, which limits how you can organize them, but it's a minor issue. Overall it's very cool.

Tough weekend in Marshall

This weekend Shannon and I headed down to Marshall for the funeral of her grandpa, Pat Clark. Pat was diagnosed with stage 4 Melanoma in July and fought courageously until he passed away on Dec 5th. It was hard to watch what the cancer was doing to him, and even harder to ultimately say goodbye. During the funeral it was said that throughout his battle with cancer, he never complained, never got upset, and just did what he could. He left behind a large, loving family that is truly lucky to have known him. May he rest in peace.

X-mas tree fun :)

We put up our tree this weekend, and to make it more fun I decided to make a simple time lapse movie of it. Embedding video on a site is kind of a pain, so here's just a couple links to RealVideo and Windows Media formats:

Windows Media format (~5M)
RealVideo format (~1.5M)

Enjoy!

Imported old content

Using a couple select ... outfile and load data infile ... statemtents I migrated my Moveable Type posts into Drupal. Once I reset the auto_increment values on the node and node_revisions tables within Drupal everything seems to be working.

There are some broken links and images I know, but I'll have to manually fix those as I find the time.
